Installing and using a multimedia CD
Installing a software means loading the software on your computer so that you can use it later without the CD. Usually the CDs are autorun or autoplay CDs, that is, they play themselves. You can run the content directly by playing the CD. But some games and software need to be Installed before they can be used. 
When you put a CD in the CD or DVD drive, the AutoPlay dialog box appears. Click on the Run Setup.exe option and the installation starts (Fig 6.2).

If the CD is not the autoplay type, follow these steps:
  • Double-click on the Computer icon on the desktop.
  • Open the folder with the CD/DVD icon.
  • Double-click on the Setup file to begin installation.
Using the software after installation
After you have finished installation, the software can be used anytime without the CD. To use the software, click on Start → All Programs. Then click on the new installed software.

Fact box
Edutainment is a term used for a combination of education and entertainment. It refers to content that educates as well as entertains.

Windows Media Player
Windows Media Player is a software used to play audio or video files. It plays a CD or a DVD directly. It can also be used to copy songs or movies to the hard disk.

Starting Windows Media Player 
To start Windows Media Player, follow the given in Figure 6.3.
  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Click on All Programs.
  3. Click on Windows Media Player.
The Windows Media Player window will open. It has various buttons for different operations (Fig. 6.4).

Games
Just as we enjoy songs and movies, we also love to play games. Playing computer games increases our memory, decision-making and problem-solving skills. However, playing them for many hours at a stretch may affect our eyes and health badly. Windows has some pre-installed games such as Chess, Solitaire, Minesweeper and Purble Place. To start a game on a computer, follow the steps given in Figure 6.5.
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on All Programs.
  • Click on Games
  • Select any game you wish to play.
There are many other games available on CDs in the market. You can buy them and install on your computer to play them. You can also download games from the Internet with the help of your teacher/ elder. Some of the popular games are: 
  • FIFA 
  • Fruit Smash 
  • Bejeweled

We all love to watch cartoons, movies and play games on a computer. All this is possible with the help of multimedia on the computer.

Multimedia
Multimedia refers to the combined use of several media such as audio, video, text, pictures, graphics and animation. Multimedia is used to present information in an interesting and effective manner.

Elements of multimedia 
The elements of multimedia are graphics, text, audio, video and animation.
  • Graphics refer to the pictures that make a multimedia program interesting and attractive
  • Text forms the basic element of a multimedia program that involves the use attractive fonts in different sizes and colors.
  • Audio includes the speech, music and sound effects in a multimedia program. 
  • Video is the use of video clips in a multimedia program.
  • Animation is a process of making a film in which drawings and images appear to move.
Uses of Multimedia
Multimedia is used for different purposes such as the following.
  • Creating computer games. 
  • Preparing educational CDs or DVDs. 
  • Creating presentations.
  • Making animated movies, advertisements and cartoons. 
  • Recording and editing music.
Nowadays, many educational multimedia CDS and DVDs are available. They have all the elements of multimedia that make the topic easy and interesting. These programs are interactive also. It means while watching a CD or a DVD, you can also give input and get the result. For example, you can take a quiz.

Deleting a slide

You can delete a slide from your presentation. Just select the slide from the Slides tab and press the Delete or Backspace key.

You can also delete multiple slides.

·         Press and hold down the Shift key and click on any two slides to select all the slides in between and delete.

·         Press and hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on non-adjacent slides and delete.

 Saving a presentation

 To save your presentation for future use, follow the steps shown in Figure 5.17.

Viewing slide show 

Slide show refers to displaying all the slides of a presentation in a sequence on the full screen. There are three ways to view a slide show. 

Method 1: Click on the Slide Show tab and click on From Beginning. You can also press F5 on the keyboard to start the slide show from the first slide .

Method 2: Click on the Slide Show button on the status bar. This starts the slide show from the current slide. 

Closing a presentation/exiting MS PowerPoint

To close a presentation, click on the Close button on the Title bar. If you have not saved the changes made in your presentation, a message box appears asking you to save it before closing. Click on Save option to save the file. 

Opening a presentation 

1. To open a saved presentation, go to the File tab and click on Open. 

2. The Open dialog box appears. 

3. Select the file you wish to open. 

4. Click on the Open button.

  • Adding bullets and numbers to a list: To add bullets and number to a list, select the text you want to present as a bulleted list then Click on the Bullets button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.
  • Alignment of text: By default, the text in a text box or placeholder is aligned at the center. To make the text aligned to the left margin, right margin or both margins of the text box, click on the alignment button of the Paragraph group on the Home tab.

  • Moving the text: To move text on a slide, select the text then place the over the text and drag it to wherever you want to place it. 
  • Moving the text box or placeholder: You can move the text box to any place on the slide. When you move the mouse pointer at the boundary of the text box, the pointer changes to a four- headed arrow. just click and drag this pointer. The text box also moves now drop the text box at any place on the slide.

In a PowerPoint presentation, text can be edited and formatted very similar to the way it is done in MS Word.
  • Modifying text: To change the font, size, style, color or case, use the different buttons in the Font group of the Home tab.
  • Deleting text: To delete text to the left of the cursor, press the Backspace key. To delete text to the right of the cursor, press the Delete key.

The Status bar is at the bottom of the PowerPoint window. it displays the slide number and total number of slides. it contains four view buttons
  • Normal View: Normal view button allows you to see a slide in the Slides pane.
  • Slide Sorter View: Slide sorter view allows you to see all the slides in a series of rows. You can rearrange the sequence of slides in this view.
  • Reading View: In this view, you can view the slides as a slide show within the MS PowerPoint window.
  • Slide show view: In this view, you can see the slides in full view without the MS PowerPoint window.

Now, we will learn about the 'Parts of the MS PowerPoint Window'.
  • Title bar: The Title is located at the top of the PowerPoint window. It displays the name of the file and the name of the program.
  • Ribbon: The Ribbon toolbar is below the Title bar. It contains many tabs.
  • File tab: File tab is the place where we find options for creating, saving and printing files, and so on.
  • Slides tab: All the slides are displayed in a small view in the Slides tab.
  • Outline tab: The Outline tab shows only the text written in a slide.
  • Slides pane: The Slides pane display the slide which currently selected.
  • Slide: A slide is a single page in a presentation.
  • Place holder: A placeholder is a box with dotted borders present on the slide.
  • Status bar: Status bar displays the slide number and total number of slides.

MS PowerPoint is a popular software used to create beautiful presentations on a computer. It is a part of the MS Office package. It has many ready made features that let you create a presentation quickly and easily.

A PowerPoint presentation consists of many pages called slides. Slides contain information in the form of text, images, sound and videos. When these slides are shown one after another in a series, it is called a slide show of the presentation.

Now, we will learn about some Storage devices.

A computer's storage device refers to any type of hardware that stores data. The most common type of storage device, which nearly all computers have, is a hard drive. The computer's primary hard drive stores the operating system, applications, files and folders for the user.
  • Hard diskhard disk drive (HDD) which is also called hard diskhard drive or fixed disk is an electro-mechanical data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital data using one or more rigid, rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material.
  • Compact diskCompact Disc or CD is a small plastic discs which store and retrieve computer data or music using light. Compact Discs replaced floppy disks because they were faster and could hold more information. CDs can hold up to 700 MB worth of data, which is about 80 minutes of music.

In this chapter we will learn about Computer memory which is of two basic types – Primary memory (RAM and ROM) and Secondary memory (hard drive, CD, etc.).

Primary memory is also known as the Internal or Main memory. The computer has two types of Primary memory, 1) Random Access Memory (RAM), which is a primary-volatile memory and 2) Read Only Memory (ROM), which is a primary-non-volatile memory.

Secondary memory refers to external storage devices that are used to store data or information permanently. Hard Disks and Pen Drives are two widely used secondary memory devices.

Now, we will learn some more about topics like Bullets and numbers , Aligning text and Mini toolbar.
Bullets and numbers
1.Creating list with numbers: We use the Numbering command in the Paragraph group of the Home tab to create a number list.
2.Creating list with bullets: We use the Bullets command in the Paragraph group of the Home tab to create a bulleted list.

Aligning text
A Paragraph can be aligned in four ways.
  • Left aligned : aligned with the left margin.
  • Right aligned : aligned with the right margin.
  • Center aligned : aligned to the center of left and right margins.
  • justified : aligned with both left and right margins.

Mini toolbar
To use the Mini toolbar, we have to select the text then a transparent mini toolbar appears on selecting text. The mini toolbar becomes visible as we move the mouse over it.

Chapter 4  Formatting in MS Word 2010

In this chapter, we will learn about 'Formatting in MS Word 2010'.
Formatting means changing the appearance of the text. In a Word document, we can change the design, size and color of a letter, number or symbol.

Now, we will learn about some formatting in MS Word 2010.
Formatting font: To format font, you have to use the buttons in the Font group of the Home tab.
Formatting font size: You can also change the size of the selected text by clicking on the Grow Font or Shrink Font buttons from the Font group.
Text effects: Text effects are the special effects such as shadow, reflection and glow that can be applied to text.
Text highlight color: Just as we mark some important points using a highlighter pen, MS Word has a command called Text highlight color for highlight text.

Now, let us learn more about Editing in Microsoft Word, 2010.
Copying textCopying means to create a duplicate copy of the selected text. The selected text remains at both locations after copying. To copy text, Copy and Paste commands are used.

Moving text:  Moving means to shift the selected text to another location. The selected text is deleted from its original location after moving. To move text, Cut and Paste commands are used.

Spelling check: MS Word also helps us in identifying spelling and grammatical mistakes. The spelling mistakes are highlighted with red wary lines. The grammatical mistakes are highlighted with green wavy lines.

Now, we will learn some more about Editing in Microsoft Word 2010.
Inserting text:
 For Inserting text, place the cursor to the right of the character after which you want to insert text and then type the text. The existing text to the right will keep shifting to the right as you insert new text.

Over typing text: For Over typing text, Place the cursor to the left of the text you want to replace. Press the insert key on the keyboard then type the new text. As you type, the text to the right of the cursor gets replaced by the new text. 

Deleting text: To delete a character, place the cursor to its right and press the Backspace key once or place the cursor to its left and press the Delete key once. To delete a block of text, select the text and press either the Delete key or Backspace key.

Undo and Redo: The Undo and Redo commands are present on the Quick Access toolbar. The Undo command is used to cancel the last action done in the document whereas the Redo command is used to cancel the action of the Undo command.

Typing text: As you start typing in MS Word, the cursor moves to the right and letters start appearing on the page.
Saving a file: After you finish typing, save the file by clicking on File=>Save.You can also click on the Save button on the Quick Access toolbar. The Save As dialog box opens. Give a name to your file in the File name box and click on the Save button.
Editing text: You can also make changes to your document. Making changes to a document is called editing.
Selecting text: Before making any visual changes to the text, it is important to select the text. The selected text is highlighted in blue. The empty space at the left hand margin of the text is known as selection bar.

Let us learn about some windows accessories like Calculator, Sticky notes and sound recorder.
  • Calculator: Calculator is an accessory used to perform calculations. To use the calculator, go to Accessories and click on the Calculator program.
  • Sticky notes: Sticky notes is an accessory program used to create reminder notes on the screen.
  • Sound recorder: Sound recorder is an accessory program used to record sound. A microphone is required to record your voice using the sound recorder program.

  • Clock- It display a clock with the current time on your desktop. We can also change the clock's design or display the time of other countries, like world time.
  • Calendar- It displays the calendar of the current year.
  • Picture Puzzle- It is a leisure gadget. It displays a puzzle as jumbled pieces of a picture to be solved by arranging the pieces. 
  • Weather-  It display the temperature and weather of the selected city or cities.

In this chapter we will learn about the operating system Windows.
Windows 7 is an operating system made by Microsoft in 2009. There are many versions of Windows. Like Windows Vista which was just before Windows 7. The Operating System, Windows 7 is used for personal computers, home and business desktops, laptops, etc.

Learn about the Basic Components of Windows 7
1. Desktop:  A desktop is the computer screen that you will ,when it is opened 
2. My Computer Folder: The My Computer Folder gives us access to all local drives and the network.
3. Recycle bin: All deleted items are stored in the Recycle Bin in case we wish to restored them later.
4. Start button: The Start button allows us to configure Microsoft Windows and to access all the programs installed on the computer.
5. Taskbar: The taskbar displays the names of the programs that are currently running on the computer.
6. Icons: Icons are small picture symbols present on the desktop screen which are like shortcuts to run programs.

  • Digital Versatile Discdigital versatile disc or DVD is an optical disc storage medium similar to a compact disc, but with enhanced data storage capacities as well as with higher quality of video and audio formats. Digital versatile discs are also known as digital video discs.
  • Blu-Ray DiscBlu-ray is an optical disc format such as a CD or DVD. It was developed for recording and playing back high-definition (HD) video content and for storing large amounts of data. Dual-layer Blu-ray discs will be able to store 50 GB of data. That is equivalent to 4 hours of HDTV.
  • USB driveUSB flash drive which is also known as a USB stickUSB thumb drive or pen drive, is a plug-and-play portable storage device that uses flash memory and is lightweight enough to attach to a key chain. A USB flash drive can be used in place of a compact disc.
